Dr. Vikas Sharma of SKUAST-J gets Research Excellence Award 2020
Jammu, March 11, 2021: Dr. Vikas Sharma S/o Sh. Harbans Lal Sharma and Pushplata Sharma, R/o Channi Himmat, Jammu get research excellence award 2020 for his research contributions in the area of anticancer studies. The award contains a Certificate of Excellence along with lifetime professional membership and reviewership of Institute of Scholars, an ISO 9001: 2015 certified Institute by International Accurate Certification, Accredited by UASL. This research award was presented to Dr. Sharma specifically for his CSIR-NISCAIR research paper publication entitled “Karonda and Jamun seeds’ in vitro anticancer efficacy. The paper discussed in vitro cytotoxic potential of seed part of Carissa carandas (karonda) and Syzygium cumini (jamun) against nine human cancer cell lines from eight different origins namely MCF-7, T-47D (breast), SF-295 (CNS), HCT-116 (colon), A-549 (lung), MDA-MB-435 (melanoma), OVCAR-5 (ovary), PC-3 (prostate) and A-498 (renal) in which karonda and jamun seeds significantly suppressed the proliferation of lung cancer cells. The paper gave solution to the selection of these two minor fruits from Jammu subtropics for further pharmacological analysis and recommend that regular consumption of these fruits will reduce the risk of lung cancer and further clarified that active molecules from these fruits can offer new drugs to provide great service to patients especially with lung carcinoma.
Working as Asstt. Professor in the Division of Biochemistry, Faculty of Basic Sciences, SKUAST-Jammu, Dr. Sharma has 165 publications of to his credit including full length research papers, abstracts, book chapters, manuals, popular articles etc. He authored 04 books and got many National and International awards / appreciations from various Govt. Educational Organizations for his contributions in the field of Science.
