Navreh Homecoming Call: Kashmiri Pandits Reaffirm Emotional Return to Ancestral Homeland

Historic Sankalp & Shaurya Diwas Events to be Observed on March 19–20 Across Globe

Jammu, March 18, 2026: In a powerful reaffirmation of cultural identity and civilisational continuity, Kashmiri Pandits across India and the global diaspora have renewed their emotional and historic resolve to celebrate Navreh, the Kashmiri New Year, in their ancestral homeland in the Valley from the coming season.

Addressing a press conference, Dr. M. K. Bharat, Chairman, Sanjeevani Sharda Kendra (SSK) and Chief Spokesperson of Navreh Mahotsav Aayojan Samiti–2026, outlined the two-day programme of Navreh Mahotsav 2026. He highlighted that, as per the Hindu calendar (Nava-Samvatsar Vikrami 2082), a rare astronomical alignment this year places Amavasya and Chaitra Shukla Pratipada on the same day (March 19), leading to the confluence of Tyag Divas and Sankalp Divas. Consequently, the Mahotsav, traditionally observed over three days, will be celebrated over March 19 and 20.

Convenor Padma Shri Dr. Kashi Nath Pandita described the Mahotsav as a “poignant homecoming movement,” emphasising that celebrations will be held not only in Jammu but also across various cities, reflecting nationwide and global participation. He underlined the profound astronomical and cultural significance of Navreh, marked by early morning rituals, including pooja and darshan of the Navreh Thali, symbolising prosperity, knowledge and continuity of life. On this occasion, members of the displaced community collectively reaffirm their resolve to return and celebrate Navreh in their birthplace in Kashmir.

The second day, March 20 (Friday), will be observed as Shaurya Divas (Vijay Divas), commemorating the valour and visionary leadership of 8th-century emperor Samrat Lalitaditya, regarded as a symbol of strength, protection and civilisational pride. A concluding ceremony of the Mahotsav will be held at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu at 3:00 PM, featuring cultural performances, intellectual discourses and tributes to historical icons.

Co-Convenor Padma Shri Brij Lal Bhat highlighted the historical importance of the occasion and called for the inclusion of the contributions of Acharya Shreya Bhat and Samrat Lalitaditya in the academic curriculum of JKBOSE, terming it a “clarion call to etch these icons into the minds of the next generation.” Another Co-Convenor, Piyaray Lal Bhat, remarked that the Mahotsav stands as a beacon connecting past glory with a vibrant future, urging the community to reclaim its sacred roots.

Dr. Bharat, in his concluding remarks, extended an open invitation to all sections of society to participate, stating that the Mahotsav is not merely a festival but a vibrant expression of cultural resurgence.

The Navreh Mahotsav Aayojan Samiti–2026, constituted by Sanjeevani Sharda Kendra in collaboration with various socio-cultural organisations, continues its mission of ensuring inclusive community participation. Organised consistently since 2021, this year marks the sixth edition of the Mahotsav, which has evolved into a collective movement with nationwide and global resonance.
