Five-day workshop on ‘AGFEDGC’ concludes at NIT Srinagar

Srinagar, July 31, 2023: The five-day workshop on “Advancements in Geotechnical and Foundation Engineering for Difficult Ground Conditions (AGFEDGC-2023)” concluded at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar.

The event was jointly organized by the IGS Srinagar Chapter in association with TC216 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) New Delhi at Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Srinagar.

The mega event was sponsored by Hydraulic and Industry Instruments (HEICO) Gold Sponsor, Aimil Ltd (Platinum Sponsor), and MACCAFERRI (General Sponsor). It was aimed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge to thrive in their academic and professional pursuits.

The valedictory function was attended by Dean R&C, Prof. (Dr.) M.F. Wani and Institute’s Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari were ‘Guest of Honor’ in the session. Around 60 participants including post-graduate scholars, engineers, and faculty members participated in the workshop from all over India.

Prof. (Dr) A Q Dar, Head, CED, NIT Srinagar was the Chairman, and Prof (Dr.) B. A. Mir (Honourable Sec.) IGS Srinagar was the convenor of the workshop.

In his key adress, Dean R&C, Prof. (Dr.) M.F. Wani said that geotechnical engineering allows for a better understanding of site-specific soil conditions, which helps optimize land usage. Proper foundation design can maximize the use of available space and prevent unnecessary excavation or grading, he said.

“Geotechnical practices can help minimize the environmental impact of construction activities. By choosing appropriate foundation types and techniques, engineers can reduce disturbance to the natural environment,” Prof. Wani said.

On the occasion, Registrar NIT Srinagar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari said that geotechnical and foundation engineering plays a critical role in ensuring the stability and safety of structures built on the ground.

“When faced with difficult ground conditions, such as weak or unstable soils, challenging topography, or extreme environmental factors, there is indeed a need for technological advancements to address these challenges effectively,” he said.

Prof. Bukhari said the workshop featured a diverse range of presentations, panel discussions, case studies, and interactive sessions. Leading experts from prestigious institutions and seasoned industry professionals shared their insights and experiences in dealing with various difficult ground conditions, he added.

Earlier Dr. Anil Joseph, President, IGS, New Delhi appreciated the Civil Engineering Department for organizing the workshop on short notice at NIT Srinagar.

On the occasion, Prof. (Dr) A Q Dar, Head, CED, NIT Srinagar said during the five-day workshop renowned researchers presented their latest findings and breakthroughs in geotechnical engineering related to challenging ground conditions.

“They emphasized the importance of adopting innovative techniques and state-of-the-art technology to overcome these obstacles effectively. Participants were able to connect with peers and experts, paving the way for future partnerships,” he said.

Convenor of the workshop, Prof (Dr.) B. A. Mir (Honourable Sec.) IGS Srinagar said this workshop enabled participants to explore cutting-edge technologies that aid in handling difficult ground conditions efficiently. The response we received for this workshop has been truly inspiring, he said.

“The workshop’s success stands as a testament to the determination of the geotechnical engineering community to overcome obstacles and push the boundaries of innovation,” he said.

“By equipping professionals with the tools and knowledge to handle difficult ground conditions effectively, this event has undoubtedly contributed to safer, more resilient, and sustainable infrastructure development,” Prof. Mir said.

He said in the future they are committed to organizing more such events to promote knowledge sharing and advancements in the field.

Prof. Mir also thanked sponsors for agreeing to deliver the lecture on short notice. He also expressed his gratitude to Director, NIT Srinagar, Prof. Sudhakar Yedla led administration for sponsoring and supporting the workshop.
