During his address, Dr Gautam Sharma explained that dental hypersensitivity is a frequent clinical problem associated with exposed dentinal surfaces and can affect patients belonging to any age group. He said the condition most commonly involves canines and premolars due to their prominent position in both dental arches.
He elaborated on multiple causative and aggravating factors responsible for dentinal hypersensitivity, including acidic food intake, attrition, abrasion, erosion, abfraction, aggressive tooth brushing, gastro oesophageal reflux disease, salivary hypofunction and related oral habits. He stressed that unchecked lifestyle factors significantly contribute to the progression of sensitivity-related complaints.
Dr Gautam Sharma underlined that accurate diagnosis and elimination of the underlying etiological factors form the foundation of effective management. He classified desensitising agents based on their mechanism of action and guided participants through various non-invasive and invasive desensitisation treatment modalities that can be adopted in routine clinical practice.
He also shared clinical insights drawn from his extensive experience, enabling participants to understand patient specific treatment planning for long term relief from dentinal hypersensitivity.
