Tragedy on the Jhelum as Boat Accident Claims Six Lives
Srinagar, April 16, 2024: A pall of grief hangs over Srinagar following a devastating boat accident on the Jhelum River that claimed the lives of six individuals, including four children. The incident, which occurred in Batwara Gandbal, has left the community reeling and sparked calls for improved safety measures on the region’s waterways.
Senior BJP leader Javid Kakroo has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and urged the Honorable Lieutenant Governor to take immediate action. “This tragedy underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols on our rivers and lakes,” Kakroo stated. “We must implement stricter regulations and ensure proper safety equipment is available and used to prevent such heartbreaking accidents from occurring again.”
The boat, carrying fifteen individuals from Gandbal to Batwara, capsized amidst rising water levels caused by recent heavy rains. While nine people were rescued, with three requiring hospitalization, the search continues for three individuals still missing.
DC Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi Ud Din Bhat, confirmed the ongoing rescue efforts by NDRF, SDRF, and Army teams. He also provided details of the victims, stating, “Of the fifteen on board, seven were minors and eight were adults. Sadly, six lives have been lost.”
