AJKPC demands 100 percent compensation in favour of affected Basmati growers
Jammu, October 25, 2021: All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC)-an organisation of elected PRI members—has urged the Central government for 100 percent compensation to Basmati growers of Jammu region who have suffered extensive damage to their crops due to recent heavy rains and hailstorm.
Senior leaders of AJKPC and representatives of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), led by UT president of AJKPC Anil Sharma, visited different parts of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts to assess the damage suffered by Basmati growers. During his visit, Sharma interacted with the affected farmers and shared their concern over the losses suffered by them.
“Basmati growers of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts have suffered extensive damage to their crops due to heavy hailstorm and rainfall. The government of India should come forward and put balm on their sufferings by announcing 100 percent compensation in their favour,” the AJKPC leader said.
Sharma said the compensation must be announced without going into caste, creed, colour and religion. “While assessing the damages to the crops of farmers, the government should also include the people who were not able to have insurance for their crops due to some reasons,” he said.
He questioned the criminal silence of elected representatives, including Members of Parliament (MPs) and District Development Council (DDC) chairpersons, over the losses of farmers due to heavy rainfall and hailstorm.
“The government has announced compensation in favour of apple growers who had also suffered damages due to weather vagaries. This was possible because elected representatives of people voiced their concern in unison. Unfortunately, representatives of people in Jammu region have failed to raise the voice of affected people,” Sharma said, adding that the affected farmers have high hopes from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expecting that they would personally intervene into the matter.
