Second edition of Vomedh’s Pagah Theatre Festival commences in a grand way to celebrate Kashmiri folk theatre

Sets the stage for an enchanting showcase of Kashmiri cultural heritage in the week-long festival.

Srinagar, July 10, 2023: The Pagah Theatre Festival Second Edition 2023, presented by Vomedh in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages (JKAACL), commenced with a grand opening program at jam packed Tagore Hall today in Srinagar. It showcased an extraordinary program flow, captivating audiences and setting the stage for a week-long celebration of Kashmiri theatre especially the folk and its rich cultural heritage.
The event was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Chief Guest Bharat Singh Manhas, Secretary of JKAACL and Guests of Honour Mohammad Amin Bhat, President of Adabi Markaz Kamraz, Prof Shaad Ramzan, Convener of Sahitya Akademi, Sanjay Saraf (National Spokesperson LJP), Satish Vimal (writer,poet & Broadcaster) Mushtaq Ali (Theatre Actor Director)among other distinguished personalities Ayash Arif, Arvind Shah. Their presence at the inaugural ceremony underscored the festival’s commitment to promoting and preserving the rich heritage of Kashmiri language and theatre.
Rohit Bhat, festival director, delivered a warm and heartfelt welcome address. Bhat expressed his deep gratitude to all attendees and participants for their unwavering support and dedication to the theatrical arts, setting a tone of enthusiasm and excitement that permeated throughout the event. The event started with mesmerizing performances of “Rouf” by Sonzal & Yimberzal Art and Cultural Group. The audience was transported to a world of artistry, dance, and storytelling, experiencing the true essence of Kashmiri culture. Choreographers Ifra and Shagufta added their unique touch, enriching the visual spectacle and leaving the attendees awe inspired.
The performances of the participating groups in the Second Edition promise to be a feast for the senses, showcasing the diversity and talent of Kashmiri theatre. From July 10 to July 16, attendees can look forward to captivating performances by renowned groups. On opening day, Kashmir Bhagat Theatre mesmerized the audience with “Bakarwaal Paather,” Directed By Manzoor Ahmad Mir a production that beautifully weaves traditional Kashmiri folklore with music, dance, and evocative storytelling. In the days to come, audiences can enjoy a range of other exceptional performances,including “Raze Pather” by Dilkash Folk Theatre, “Darze Pather” by Nund-I-Reshi Folk Theatre, “Mokjar” by SMS Cultural Forum, “Bochi” by Feroze Cultural Forum, “Mele Kane” by Azad Dramatic Cultural Club, and “Mouj” by Mehak Dramatic Club. Festival director Rakesh Roshan Bhat expresses his excitement, stating, “The diverse range of performances by these talented groups will transport audiences into the heart and soul of Kashmiri theatre, leaving an indelible mark on their theatrical journey.”
In addition to the captivating performances, the festival fostered intellectual discourse with a thought-provoking panel discussion on the preservation of Kashmiri language and theatre. Esteemed panelists, including Dr Ayash Arif, Mohammad Amin Bhat, Prof Shaad Ramzan, Arvind Shah, and Reshi Rashid, engaged in passionate conversations, delving into the challenges and opportunities surrounding the safeguarding of Kashmir’s cultural heritage.Chief Guest Bharat Singh Manhas, Secretary of JKAACL delivered an inspiring speech, acknowledging the remarkable talent and creativity exhibited throughout the festival.
The Pagah Theatre Festival Second Edition 2023 has begun on a remarkable note, leaving audiences eager for the spectacular lineup of performances yet to come. The event was ably compered by renowned Rashid Nizami. Nizami’s insightful presentation provided attendees with a comprehensive glimpse into the diverse and enthralling lineup of performances awaiting them in the days to come.
