Police organized a webinar on ‘Mental health issues and support for Police Personnel’ in Budgam
January, 08, 2021: Police in Budgam held a Webinar to discuss the challenges that police faces vis-a-vis their mental health in the context of the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic and the nature of their duties. The event also discussed how to develop a strategy for good mental health support.
The webinar was held on the TEAMS platform with over 90 participants including officers and jawans. The participants mainly included the policemen posted outside district headquarters remaining away from their families for long durations. The event was scheduled for an hour.
The expert panel comprised of Dr Nisar Ahmad Wani (Professor in Psychology), Dr Muzafar Ahmad Khan (Director of Youth Development and Rehabilitation Centre Srinagar) and Mrs Insha Hassan (Psychiatrist) and in-charge of Drug De-addiction Centre DPL Budgam.
During deliberations, the thrust was given to Socio and Psychological aspects of mental health. The participants were encouraged to adopt and develop positive thinking and approach in life. An effective and simple psychological therapy for sorting out the mental health issues was also shared with the participants.
Dr Nisar highlighted the cognitive, behavioural and emotional components of mental health while Dr Muzaffar discussed numerous ways of maintaining mental health. Mrs Insha through her presentation highlighted different psychological aspects of stable mental health.
The panelists agreed that evidence suggests that the routine work of a policeman is associated with several forms of stress, including physical and psychosocial.
The webinar also discussed the growing cause for concern for the mental health implications of the current Covid-19 pandemic.
