Vomedh’s ‘Lalleshwari’ Revives Spiritual Heritage at Tagore Hall
Suman Pandita's Mesmerizing Portrayal Leaves Audience Spellbound
Srinagar, August 02, 2025: An audience at Srinagar’s Tagore Hall was treated to a profound theatrical experience today with the staging of “Lalleshwari,” a production by Vomedh that delved into the life of Kashmir’s revered 14th-century saint-poetess. This captivating performance, proudly presented as part of the ongoing Saptahik Rangdhara series in collaboration with the Department of Culture and JKAACL, left the hall in a state of pin-drop silence, culminating in a powerful standing ovation.
The play, based on a script by Bal Krishan Sanyasi and masterfully designed and directed by Rohit Bhat, explored the mystical journey of self-realization that defined Lalleshwari’s life. The production, which has previously received overwhelming acclaim in both Jammu and Srinagar, once again proved its magnetic appeal. The atmosphere was electric, with attendees so engrossed in the performance that the customary applause between scenes was replaced by a collective, focused silence, a testament to the play’s captivating power.

At the heart of this spectacular show was the versatile actress Suman Pandita, who carried the entire weight of the play on her shoulders with breath-taking grace and intensity. A seasoned artist who has carved a niche for herself across TV, films, and theatre, Pandita transformed the role of Lalleshwari into a mesmerizing, living entity. Her performance was not merely an act; it was a spiritual channelling that sent the audience into a trance, many of them even not knowing Kashmiri language, making them forget their surroundings as they followed the saint’s journey.

The immersive atmosphere was crafted by set and lighting designers Shazi Khan, Tahir, and Kamakshya Dogra. The emotional core of the play was amplified by a soul-stirring musical score from composer Rajesh Khar, featuring hauntingly beautiful vocals by Pallavi Koul and Shazia Bashir. The narrative thread was skillfully tied together by narrator Ramesh Marratha.
