“Gadd Bateh” Captivates Audience at JKAACL’s Saptahik Rangdhara

Kashmiri Play by Pir Panchal (CESES) Organisation Explores Cultural Preservation and Community Spirit

Jammu, June 14, 2025: The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) continued its vibrant Saptahik Rangdhara weekly theatre series with a heartwarming presentation of the Kashmiri play “Gadd Bateh.” Staged by the Pir Panchal (CESES) Organisation, the play resonated deeply with the audience, offering a poignant and humorous exploration of cultural preservation and the enduring spirit of community.

Ms. Harvinder Kour, Secretary of JKAACL, graced the occasion and presented a memento to the performing group, acknowledging their outstanding and emotionally rich performance. In her address, she commended the group for bringing such a culturally resonant story to life, highlighting the play’s ability to connect with the audience on a profound level.

“Gadd Bateh,” penned by the acclaimed Rakesh Roshan Bhat and skillfully directed by Rohit Bhat, centers around the life of a Kashmiri Pandit. The protagonist, dedicated to upholding the cultural traditions of the KP community in exile, faces the bittersweet reality of being unable to celebrate the significant ritual of Gadd Bateh (fish and rice offering) for 35 years due to not owning a home in Jammu. When he finally builds his own house, his intention is to mark the occasion quietly. However, the narrative takes a delightful turn as various characters – his spirited daughter-in-law, a fish-loving neighbour, and even the divine intervention of Garr Devta – transform his modest wish into a memorable and joyous celebration.

The play’s success was largely attributed to the stellar performances delivered by the talented cast. Vinay Pandita, in the role of Tathya, offered a poignant and heartfelt portrayal of a man deeply rooted in tradition yet yearning for a sense of belonging. Rahul Pandita, as Bub Ji, infused the stage with warmth and subtle humor. King C Bharati, playing Sanje Bocch, brought an infectious energy and charm to his character. Supriya Pandita’s graceful performance as Daizy beautifully captured a youthful and enthusiastic spirit. Ravi Dhar delivered an intense and moving performance as Ramesh, while Bharti Koul’s portrayal of Asha Ji was mature and emotionally grounded. A standout performance came from Jatinder Jotshi, whose portrayal of Gar Divta captivated the audience with a powerful and divine presence.

The seamless production was also a testament to the dedicated efforts of the backstage team. The insightful script was written by Rakesh Roshan Bhat. Costumes, designed by Bharti Kaul, authentically reflected the cultural context. Lighting, expertly managed by Ravinder Sharma, and Himagini Moza enhanced the mood and atmosphere. Makeup by Shammy Damir added to the character portrayals, while properties, managed by Sushma Kumari, contributed to the authenticity of the scenes. The evocative music, composed by Ishu Bharti Pandit, beautifully complemented the narrative.

Anil Tickoo, ACO, skilfully conducted the proceedings of the event, ensuring a smooth and engaging experience for all.

Looking ahead, the Saptahik Rangdhara series will continue next week, on Saturday, June 21st, 2025, with the presentation of the Hindi play “Malik Kamal Noukar Dhamaal” by the Group Society for Environment Education & Modern Arts.
